Pennsylvania
Situation Report
Amateur (Ham) Radio

If you are not already a licensed Amateur (Ham) Radio Operater, please consider getting your license. Passing the entry level exam is easier than ever and there is NO Morse Code to learn. The test consists of 35 questions taken from a 384 question pool. Radio Shack sells the Gordon West book that contains all of the questions and answers for the test and the book does a nice job at explaining each correct answer.

With a minimum investment of $150 or so, you will be amazed at what you can do. With a hand held 2 meter radio and a good antenna, you can become a valued participant in the emergency communications community.

Please check out my Basic Starting Guide, "Getting Started in Amateur (HAM) Radio (Easily and inexpensively)". And if I can be of any help, please drop me a line:

  • Emergency Communications HF Nets are regularly scheduled drills which serve as practice and preparation for actual communications emergencies. Emergency Communications Nets also serve the purpose of verification that all the participants of the net have properly functioning radio equipment.

  • (For those who may not be familiar, "Traffic" refers to message handling.)

Traffic Nets are regularly scheduled nets for the purpose of handling and delivering messages via Ham Radio. Proper and accurate message handling is a very important aspect of Emergency Communcations. NTS and ARRL are the organizations that sets the standards and protocols for message handling proceedures.
